2009 World Men's Handball Championship

When talking about Croatia in connection with sports everybody is immediately thinking of the 2009 World Men’s Handball Championship which took place from January 16, 2009 to February 1, 2009. Until today it is considered as one of the greatest and most popular sports events that took ever place in Croatia. Furthermore also Croatian cities, in particular Split, Zadar, Osijek, Varaždin, Porec, Zagreb and Pula, benefited from this championship as still today hundreds of tourists come to Croatia in order to visit those cities in which the respective handball tournaments were held.

Nearly every handball fan and hobby handball player remembers the opening game as well as the final game of the 2009 World Men’s Handball Championship in Croatia. It was a festive ceremony that showed all people that also Croatia as a particularly unpopular country regarding sports in general was able to hold a championship. Croatia placed second while France came off as winner of the whole tournament.

When talking about the history of Croatian sports, Franjo Bučar, who was born in 1866 and died in 1946, can be mentioned. He is widely regarded to be the father of modern Croatian sport. Moreover, he is also famous and very popular for the foundation of the Croatian Sports Federation in 1909.
